As we approach the 101st anniversary of the Police Strike of 1919, here is a short movie telling the story of the strike and the events leading up to it.
Last year we held an event to commemorate the centenary and wrote a book to tell the story of what happened. We invited family members of the Birmingham officers who took part in the strike to learn more about what their relatives were involved in, and recognised their contribution to policing.
Policing in 1919 was incredibly tough and significantly underpaid. Many of these officers risked everything to fight for improvements to pay and working conditions, some only months away from retirement. Everyone in the police family today benefits from what these officers fought for and should be aware of these historic events.
