The lock-up and the future of WMP heritage

In June 2017, we launched our first open day at the Steelhouse Lane Lock-up. The West Midlands Police Museum had been closed since October 2015, when the force announced that Sparkhill Police Station was due to be sold off as part of a vital estate rationalisation programme. The lock-up itself had its last prisoner in March 2016 when the new custody block opened in Perry Barr.

It therefore made perfect sense for us to bring a selection of items from the museum to the lock-up and allow the public the chance to finally see behind its big wooden doors.

Corinne Brazier talks about why we felt we should open up the lock-up and Chief Superintendent Sally Bourner, Chair of the Museum Committee reminds us why our heritage is important.
