PC Bertie Gready

The bombing overnight on the 9th/10th April was one of the most intense air raids experienced by Birmingham. Five police officers lost their lives in the city that night. PC Bertie Gready was killed when a bomb landed just outside Digbeth Police Station, destroying the mess room just inside the wall. PC Gready sustained the full impact of the blast and suffered multiple injuries, dying before he made it to hospital. 23 year old PC Gready left behind a young wife.
